The Deney Salonu concept as presented here was pioneered by Kamille of Rockabelly. We are proud to bring this event to Pittsburgh as a lead up to the Festival Nouveau Pittsburgh!
Deney Salonu is Turkish for “Experimental Salon”.
This is the PERFECT place for dancers to experiment, to try new things, to be nervous in a safe environment. New dancers who are not quite ready for a big stage can try out performing and present their hard work to their friends and family. More advanced and professional dancers can use this event to try out a new piece, try a new prop or style for the first time, or get critique to help them grow. Any performer who would like to get written feedback from the audience may do so. Audience members will be given cards for feedback and may choose to leave feedback for dancers who asked for it.
Within this event we begin to create an intimate community of support, that can give you honest critical response, strengthen you, and encourage your work. This is a unique experience and exciting for both the performer and the audience member.

How it Works
Each audience member is given a simple program and a set of large index cards, one for each performer. At the start of the evening all the performers gather onstage and we have a discussion together with the audience about how to give constructive critique. Performers are encouraged to participate in the critique for the performances they are not in. Good time for a group photo!
After each performance, roughly 3 mins of background music is played while the audience writes their comments.
There is no intermission, as folks have the short breaks they can sneak off to the bathroom in.
At the end of the night, the audience is directed to put their cards into folded origami boxes that have each performer’s picture and name on them. We also have another one hour hangout and chat time, which is a chance for performers to get verbal feedback as well. After clean up the performers take their boxes home with them.
